Nina Azucar is a DJ based in Brooklyn, NY who has displayed her talents for a diverse clientele across the city. Her creative aesthetic is all inclusive and celebrates the best from all musical genres, which stems from formal musical training and a rich cultural background that informs her style to this day. As a youth, Nina stayed abreast of trends in hip hop, house and alternative music by recording customized mix tapes, featuring choice song selections from her favorite radio shows, on her brothers boombox.
Born and raised in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, Nina was exposed to sounds from all over the Caribbean including dancehall, reggae and soca, which she frequently incorporates into her sets. She credits her parents, who rep Puerto Rico and Haiti respectively, for exposing her to musical genres that reflect her roots, such as bomba y plena, salsa, merengue, kompa and zouk. Her mothers all time favorite singer, who was featured prominently on the record player, was the late great Celia Cruz, whose catchphrase of "¡Azúcar!" was adopted and repurposed as the surname to Nina's alter ego.
Having earned Masters Degrees in both Classical Voice and Education, Nina calls upon her formal musical training to lend a polished and distinguished sound to her sets. However, Nina's biggest and most important influence is her crowd who she takes great care in reading to curate an experience that they will never forget.
Over the course of her DJ career, Nina's signature style, which incorporates seamless transitions & thoughtful song selections, has caught the attention of many respected figures in the industry. Recently, Nina was crowned Uptown’s Best DJ 2016 by Kool DJ Red Alert & DJ Stormin Norman for the Uptown Art Of The Mix Battle. She has been called upon to display her talents at some of the hottest parties in NYC and has had the pleasure of sharing the turntables with, and opening for, prominent acts such as DJ Evil Dee, DJ Premier, Tony Touch, Lord Finesse, Natasha Diggs, DJ Scratch, Talib Kweli, Easy Mo Bee, DJ Moma & more. Nina has also displayed her talents on a weekly radio show, Altered State, which was an open format, genre bending musical stream of consciousness, that aired every Sunday from 6pm-8pm on Beatminerz Radio.
Besides DJ'ing, Nina Azucar is a freelance writer and frequently updates her blog with event, album and artist reviews, incorporating a dash of social commentary. Check out some of her work here.
